Both the Q5 as well as the Q7 Max Series get very excellent scores in our floor tests that test for bare floors and are particularly effective at cleaning pet hair. However, they do have a few flaws however, which prevent them from being our top choice. One of the weaknesses of the Q5 is its navigation system does not feature AI-powered obstacles avoidance. It’s therefore prone to getting stuck on socks and shoes, and it couldn’t navigate densely packed rooms very well in our tests. Plus, it’s very quiet and you can use it while you’re at work or going to school. The only thing it lacks that you can’t find in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming of floors with no floor. And it’s less effective at mopping, relying on disposable wet wipes that don’t hold on for long and don’t handle dried-on debris. The Q5 has an auto-emptying dock, however. If you’re required to mop, the mopping pad can be replaced with an awe-inspiring one in a matter of minutes.
2. iRobot Roomba X30
The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact elegant vacuum cleaner that can also mop floors. Its nimble navigation and intelligent cleaning maps make it easy to clean and efficient in taking on larger particles, such as pet hair. It also has strong suction and a self-emptying bin. It’s the best robotic hoover for carpets but it isn’t as effective as some of its competitors in terms of deep cleaning.
This high-performing combination vacuum and mop makes use of advanced sensors to dodge obstacles and pet waste and it also learns your home’s layout over time to ensure more efficient cleaning. The app allows you to set up zones and modify the cleaning schedule. Its battery life is average compared to other models.
You can tell the X30 Ultra to remove its mop and extend them when in a carpeted area, which helps prevent cross-contamination. The flex arm can be utilized to reach under furniture that is low and along baseboards. It’s more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, however, it comes with superior suction, an onboard dustbin that automatically emptys into its base, and also supports voice commands via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can even clean the floor after vacuuming it, something we’ve not seen on other robot vacuum/mop combos.
3. Roomba X40 from iRobot
This robot vacuum and mop combination features a sleek, circular look that looks more like a regular Roomba unit than the boxy models from the competition. It’s among our most appealing looking robot vacuums. The latest model from iRobot is also the most intelligent. It features advanced features such as enhanced dirt detection and future compatibility (another company’s robot that is able to wash mop pads in a self-cleaning manner).
It’s the only robotic mop or vacuum that has an exemplary 10/10 in our tests thanks to a blend of high-tech sensors that include cameras, a structured lighting system, and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could refill and empty its basestation on its own. It also boasted an industry-leading suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop mops.
As with other iRobot models as well, the X40 is easy to use, offering an intuitive mobile app interface as well as integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant. The only issue is that it’s an eerily noisy device, which can be problematic if you run it in the morning before work or in the evening as you attempt to sleep.
It’s also a bit expensive, but not as much as the Ecovacs MaxV Ultra or Roborock S8 Omni, which are both equally powerful and more attractive. This is a two-in-one vacuum that’s very capable however, it will cost you more and make more noise.
4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra
The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop with many advanced features that let you get rid of your chores. Like Ecovacs’ range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock’s S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-off cleaning machine that takes the care of mopping and vacuuming. It comes with a multifunction dock that automatically empties the vacuum’s dustbin, refills its water tank, and cleans and dry its mop pads.
The smart robot uses LIDAR and structured lighting to draw out floorplans and identify obstacles. It can navigate more efficiently than its premium competitors. It also comes with a front-mounted camera for real-time detection of hazards however this was not completely foolproof in our tests, and was sometimes confused with power cords or obstructions.
The vacuum cleaner comes with a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to accomplish the task. It also has an attribute called “Intelligent Dirt Detection”, that regulates the vacuum’s power and adjusts cleaning frequency for various areas of the home based on how dirty these areas tend to be.
For larger homes it’s recommended to choose one with zone or spot cleaning modes that allow you to instruct the robot to clean one particular area of your home via the app or voice commands. If you have a lot of furniture, a stairway mode is also useful. Also a recharge and resume feature that lets your robot vacuum take over exactly where it left off is great for busy families.
iRobot RX3
The RX3 is a cleaner with more intelligence than you’d expect from its price tag. It is a good vacuum cleaner and was able to remove 55% of debris in our tests. (It was only second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops using a single pad and a reciprocating motion that is more efficient than most of the mop cleaners with robots that we’ve examined. It’s also extremely self-sufficient, with a fully-featured application, and a self emptying, washable base.
The iRobot app is designed to guide you through a mapping run, which gathers information on your floorplan as well as any “no go” areas you’ve marked on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules, set up the perfect spot for cleaning or prioritise your dirtiest rooms to improve performance. The app comes with a variety of options, including seasonal suggestions, customized mapping, and advanced cleaning settings.
